INSTRUCTING AT TFC
Teach members of a club you’re part of.
Our instructors are club members approved by the board to instruct.
What we offer
You keep everything you charge
Independent contractor, paid directly by students. TFC takes no overhead. You set your own rates.
No dues
Members approved to instruct are exempt from the $100 monthly dues while instructing 25+ hrs/year and attending safety meetings.
You set your own schedule
You and your students decide when you fly. No required hours, no sitting at a desk waiting for walk-ins.
A steady local student pool
Bryan–College Station has over 200,000 residents, and Texas A&M brings roughly 50,000 students through town, renewing every semester.
Maintenance we don’t cut corners on.
We have an outstanding A&P on field for routine work and 100-hour inspections.
Our fleet
We do not currently operate a complex, high-performance, or multiengine aircraft.
What we ask
We expect instructors to be professionals: keep your appointments, put student progress and safety first, and follow club policy. Two specific requirements come with the dues waiver: instruct at least 25 hours per year, and attend our safety meetings.
How to become a club instructor
Come to a meeting. Then come to another one.
Before you apply, attend at least one club meeting as a guest. Our instructors work directly with our members, and both sides should know what they're getting into.
Join as a member
Complete the standard membership process, including the $500 buy-in. If the board doesn't approve your instructor application, your buy-in is returned in full. Once approved, your dues are waived while you meet the requirements above.
Apply for instructing privileges
Fill out the form below after you've met steps 1 and 2.
Present a short ground lesson
At a future meeting, you'll teach a brief ground lesson to the club. Pick any subject you would actually teach. We are looking at how you explain things, not testing you.
Board vote
The board votes on instructor applications.
Checkout with the chief CFI
Once approved, you'll fly a checkout with our chief instructor. Then you can start instructing.
This process takes time by design. We’re looking for instructors who intend to be part of the club, not to pass through it.
